  Winter Carp Fishing

Catching carp in winter has a reputation for being tricky but I think I've created methods at Vaux which turn the odds in my favour. Let me offer you an example;

On Thursday, 24th November a fantastic helping of mixed giant maize and wheat, cooked and ready in bulk, had been fed to the carp at Vaux over a deep spot inside the middle from the lake where they are constantly fed in winter.

Prior to this and up to 2nd December, this carp feeding spot could not be observed because it is in deep water and there had only been a little quantity of carp faeces showing inside the lake. Carp faeces indicate what they've been feeding on; these sausage shapes, bound by a glutinous substance to ensure that they float, are quickly recognisable.

Heavy rain overnight on 1st/2nd December brought an excellent adjust of water into the lake from the river, which normally stimulates the carp to feed whatever the time in the year it takes place. On 2nd December I could see an excessive quantity of carp faeces within the lake and at about 11.30am carp began showing over the prior week's baiting, rolling and jumping out of your water.

At about midday the air temperature was 15° and also the water temperature 9°, so acquiring observed this carp activity, I right away had three rods out on the deep spot.

I place out two with the rods with glaçons packed with maize and wheat, the hook lengths baited with boilies greedy pig style, double 20s, along with the third rod using a pva bag filled with carp and trout pellets, plus a single boilie.

Boilies usually are not my normal decision for fishing more than particles;I commonly use pop-up maize or real maize on the hook length, but the boilies were readily and speedily available.

All 3 rods were on semi-tight clutches, no bait runners, and I was working with my summertime rigs on every of them simply because they were already produced up and attached; fluoro carbon Mainline 12lb, fluoro carbon leaders 2m, 4oz leads, one particular with inline and two on distance lead and clips, hook lengths were stiff boom using a brief supple section attached, size 6-7 Mugga hook tied KD style (ie aggressively).

At two.20pm each glaçon rods went inside seconds of one another, indicating steady takes and resulting inside a 49lb 12oz mirror as well as a 48lb 10oz mirror, which had been weighed and returned to the water.

Both rods had been baited again and put back out towards the very same spot. Distinctive boilies had been made use of every single time on the rods, taken from the freezer at random. At 3.30pm certainly one of the glaçon rods went once again, using a steady take, which resulted in a 37lb typical. I didn't place that rod back out again.

At four.10pm the remaining glaçon rod went, when much more a steady take, once again resulting in a widespread at 38lb. There had been no takes on the rod using the pva bag filled with carp and trout pellets even they they may be low oil.

While the carp continued to roll and crash, I completed for the day at this point.

I monitor Vaux lake 365 days of your year. I monitor bait disappearing off the feeding spots by netting and checking carp faeces to assess carp feeding patterns. As I talked about in my October News Report, 'Chas's fishing holiday', I have found that some carp, the significant ones, are consuming only the maize and some, the smaller ones, are eating only the wheat.

Also in that report I explained my process mix working with liquified roach and dace. I initially experimented with this mix when I was fishing with an associate for huge pike last winter. I baited a set of trebles with roach deadbait which I dropped using the glaçon more than an place previously baited with maize and wheat for carp, which constantly shows a lot of activity because the roach feed on this carp winter feed.

As the glaçon melts, a chum region is formed around the deadbait and disperses via the water even in winter as a result of all of the oil from the roach. We had fantastic results catching pike working with this strategy, but we also noted at the time there was an increase inside the carp actively feeding on these spots exactly where the glaçons had been placed, resulting in two carp being caught unintentionally on little deadbaits.

Seeing how this liquified fish glaçon stimulated the carp, I have been employing them during my summer and winter sessions with a mixture of particle mix plus the liquified roach, but on every session making use of distinct finish bait; greedy pig double boilies as explained above, on a earlier session giant pop-up 35mm and 40mm pop-ups and on a different a combination of giant pop-up greedy pig rigs, double 20s, 30mm and 40mm pop-ups. On every single occasion I've caught 40lb+ carp

The very first year that I fished Vaux in winter I adopted standard English tactics, working with smaller sized leads, scaled down hook size and tiny baits, and my catches had been unimpressive.

During the last seven winters I've adopted various techniques and as an alternative to scaling down, I actually use larger baits in winter, the purpose becoming that Vaux has a lot of natural food coming via at this time of your year and also the carp are utilised to feeding on big baits for instance chestnuts, beech nuts, acorns and large quantities of seed coming off the smaller trees lining the banks.

There have been quite a few anglers more than the years who've caught carp on uncooked chestnuts and that have also substituted beech nuts, which the carp absolutely really like, with brazil nuts and almonds, all with great final results.
